CERTIFICATION PROCESS

ABOUT VEC:

The VEC model offers two types of certification: The Certificate of Attendance and the Certificate of Examination. In gaining these qualifications, students of vocational English will enhance their career prospects both in their home countries and abroad.

The Certificate of Attendance is awarded to the learner who successfully completes two key areas of the program of study: both the completion of the full vocational English course at an authorised Center for Vocational English Training (CVET) and the development of a language portfolio in their chosen field of study. The portfolio should include: 21 quizzes, 3 general tests, 9 writing tasks and 3 speaking assignments (recorded in MP3 format) in their field of study. The Vocational English courses are specifically designed to give students the English they need to succeed in their chosen field of study, while increasing their chance of success in the exams. It should be noted, however, that obtaining the Certificate of Attendance is not a prerequisite for sitting a VEC examination.

The Certificate of Examination is awarded to candidates who are successful in the VEC examination in their chosen field, held at authorized Centers for Vocational English Examinations (CVEEs) on predetermined dates.

VEC EXAMINATION INFORMATION

Four VEC Examinations are held per year: January, March, June and October. The Online version of the examination in particular, can be arranged on demand (subject to specific requirements).

Each VEC Examination lasts 60 minutes and comprises five parts:

  • Part 1 – Listening
The aim of this section is to test the candidate’s ability to comprehend exchanges in spoken English related to their professional field. They are given three statements for each dialogue and must decide which of the three is true, according to what they hear.
  • Part 2 – Knowledge of Linguistic Means
The Knowledge of Linguistic Means section aims to assess the candidate’s knowledge of the vocabulary they would be expected to know in their professional field.
  • Part 3 – Knowledge of Language Functions
This section aims to assess the candidate’s ability to understand the functional spoken English they would be expected to be familiar with in their professional field.
  • Part 4 – Reading
The Reading section consists of three short texts, all related to the vocational field being examined. The aim of Part 4 is to assess the candidate’s ability to deal with realistic written texts of the types they would expect to meet in their profession.
  • Part 5 – Writing Awareness
The Writing Awareness section aims to assess the candidate’s ability to recognize the functional writing and text types required in their field of study, and demonstrate their knowledge of the structures, elements and content to be expected in such texts, as well as their internal flow and logic. The candidates need to familiarize themselves with the various types of writing texts they will encounter or need to produce in their vocational field.

REGISTER FOR A VEC EXAMINATION

The first step for a candidate wishing to attain the Certificate of Examination is to register for the examination.

In order to register for an examination, it is highly recommended that examination candidates attend a specialized course and complete the assessment portfolio tasks, as they are designed to complement the examination process and significantly add to the VEC learning experience. Moreover, Madagascar Professional Training Centre (MPTC) staff will assist candidates with the registration procedure.

Alternatively, candidates can register for an examination directly in the INTERVENG Portal.

  • During the first step of the registration process, candidates are required to submit their personal information (first name, surname, father’s full name, date of birth, etc) to create an account. Then they should use their credentials, enter the portal and order the examination in the vocational field of their choice. During registration, each candidate is assigned a unique VEC candidate serial number. That serial number is the identification code used within the VEC assessment and examination system.
  • Once all personal information has been successfully submitted, the candidate receives a Confirmation of Data Entry receipt. The receipt includes the personal details submitted and the chosen vocational field, along with the local registration fee and payment options available to the candidate. Candidates should check all personal information printed on the Confirmation of Data Entry receipt for errors, as submitted data can still be amended. It is essential that each candidate review and confirm the details on the receipt, as these are used to issue certificates.
  • The candidates need to select a method of payment in order to pay for registration.
  • A candidate’s registration is finalized only after the candidate has paid the registration fee. Candidates that have finalized their registration receive a Personal Examination Ticket in electronic form, which includes the candidate’s personal information, their unique serial number, the selected vocational field, plus the date, time and the appointed Centre for Vocational English Examinations (CVEE) for the upcoming examination.
